Mary’s primary areas of interest are Family Communication and Health Communication. She has conducted research studying various communication processes in the family including conflict patterns among adult siblings, bystander effect among siblings versus strangers, and relational maintenance behaviors used in mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships. Mary also has an interest in Communication and Aging and a graduate certificate in Gerontology. Her work has been presented at Eastern Communication Association, Southern States Communication Association, and National Communication Association conferences and published in the Iowa Journal of Communication.
