Play: Man in the Mirror

On June 24, 2009 Ed Thomas was shot and killed in Aplington-Parkersburg’s makeshift weight room. The original weight room was destroyed, along with most of Parkersburg and Aplington-Parkersburg High School the previous summer when an EF-5 tornado ripped through the town. The tornado’s destruction left the small town in deep despair. However, driven by Thomas’s motivation and determination, the town of Parkersburg, the high school, and most importantly the hope of the town was rebuilt. After his death, it seemed as though Aplington-Parkersburg had no hope of rebuilding without its core strength. However, his legacy and life lessons lived on within each individual in the community because he had such an impact on everyone’s life. This play is an attempt to show what could have happened to some of the students and community members had Thomas not touched so many lives in a positive way. This play proves that what Ed Thomas taught his students and community members was far greater than any emotion, guilt, or fear they may have felt. This play is in memory of Coach Ed Thomas.
