Registration for Fall 2013

Campus Connect Fall 2013 Registration for the Storm Lake Campus will open on the following dates at 8:15AM for each group of students: Honors - March 31, Seniors/Juniors - April 1-4, Sophomores - April 7-11, First Year - April 14-16, Special - April 17. Information has been emailed to Storm Lake campus students and their advisors. If you did not receive an email, please contact Lori Berglund (berglundl@bvu.edu) in the Registrar's Office.

Faculty/ Staff Payroll Cutoff

Monday,May 20th is the faculty/staff payroll cut-off for the range of dates of 4/15/13-05/19/2013. Please have your timecard approved by noon and make sure there are no purple times. Our Culture: Our Stories Reception

Check out our stories! Two Buena Vista University courses will be hosting a special reception Wednesday, May 22nd to celebrate the community’s stories uncovered by BVU students and Storm Lake sixth graders through the Our Culture: Our Stories projects. The gallery includes videos and pictures about diversity, social justice, and the BVU community, showing off all of the great work that has been done by these students this semester. The reception is from 6-8 p.m. in the BVU Art Gallery in the Social Science and Arts Hall on campus. Refreshments will also be provided. The display opens on Monday, May 20th and will continue to be open until Saturday, May 25th.

Moonlight Breakfast

Student Affairs invites you to take a break from studying for finals and join us in the food court between 9:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. tonight. Tonight we will have scrambled eggs, salsa, bacon, fresh fruit, breakfast pizza and pancakes with strawberries, blue berries, bananas and lots of whip cream. We also encourage you to relax and join in a game of trivia with prizes. We hope to see you there.

Woman's Ring Found

A woman’s ring was found near the Food Court and turned into Student Affairs on Friday, May 17. Please stop in Student Affairs and check with Security if you lost a ring and can give a description of the lost item. Thank you.

Fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research

Be a hero for kids with cancer! Whether you decide to shave your head, donate to Locks of Love, help with fundraising, volunteer, or donate, you'll be a part of a truly wonderful project. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Get involved and you'll be giving hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. If you have any interest in helping with this fundraiser through shaving your head, cutting your hair, or volunteering, contact Emily Crouch at crouemi@bvu.edu.

End of Year Reminder

A reminder to all students to turn in all keys, books, supplies, computers (if graduating or not returning), etc. to prevent additional charges on your student account. Please check your student account balance before leaving campus. Any students with a balance due will have a financial hold on their account that will prevent students from registering for classes for Fall. Students not enrolled in the upcoming fall semester are required to turn in their notebook computers before they leave. Students not pre-registered, or who do not return in the fall, will be charged a daily fee for use of their computer until it is returned. In addition, no transcripts or diplomas are released until accounts are paid in full. Students are not allowed to return until all outstanding balances are paid. Accounts may be viewed or paid through Campus Connect at any time. If you have questions, please stop by the Business Office or call at 749-2041. Commencement

Congratulations Seniors! We want to wish you well on your achievement. Please check out the commencement web page for all the details regarding Commencement Day: http://www.bvu.edu/commencement/. Please note that on Commencement Day, Sodexo will be serving a commencement brunch that is open to your friends and family. Tickets for the brunch buffet may be purchased at the Sodexo Foodservice Office between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. through Friday, May 24, with ticket also being sold from 9-11 a.m. Commencement morning in the foyer outside Anderson Auditorium or at the door. We would encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance so as to make your Commencement Day run as smooth as possible.

CHECK YOUR RIDE Before End of Semester

As part of the 24/7 For Your Safety initiative, the Office for Student Affairs, in cooperation with Fitzpatrick Auto Center, encourages all BVU students to Check Your Ride before you travel at the end of the semester. Simply go to Fitzpatrick Auto Center, 1301 N. Lake, during the week of Wednesday, May 15 – Wednesday, May 22 to have a Fitzpatrick technician give your vehicle a quick safety inspection. Fitzpatrick technicians will check all of your fluid levels, check all your belts and hoses, and check your tire pressure. The best part is, it's absolutely free! Just bring your BVU Student ID with you in order for you to participate. If you have any questions, please contact the Office for Student Affairs.

Residence Halls Closing

All students not graduating should be checked out of their residence hall room within 24 hours after their last final exam and no later than 6:00pm on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Graduates and students assisting with graduation must be checked out no later than 12:00pm on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Summer students will begin to move to their summer rooms on Sunday, May 26, 2013. All students who are staying on campus after Thursday, May 23, 2013 and are not a graduating senior will need to be approved by the Director of Residence Life. Approvals are limited and will only be given for University obligations. All students should make sure that they properly check out of their room with a Resident Assistant before leaving campus. Finals Massages!

On Monday, May 20th we will have massages available to the students from 11am to 4pm in Dows Conference Center. A reminder to all students: please sign up at 11am! ACES Change of Grade Deadline Extended

ACES Change of Grade Contract Deadline has been extended until noon on Friday, May 24. If you have not fulfilled the minimum requirements for the current semester, but you have attended a minimum of 6 events (including the correct distribution), you may file for an ACES “Change of Grade Contract”. A maximum of 2 events may be made up with a change of grade contract. You will find the link on the ACES Homepage in the upper left hand corner. Go to this link and follow the instructions for submission. You will find this link on the ACES Homepage must submit this before 12:00 p.m., Friday, May 24. You will find information concerning “Change of Grade Contracts” under “Requirements” on the ACES website. Thank You

I want to thank everyone who was able to attend the farewell party in my honor on Tuesday afternoon and to the many who contributed to a gift card, thank you so much. A sincere thank you to Dr. McKeon and Student Affairs for the beautiful plaque which I will treasure always. Grace Sullivan and Jeff Loving, thank you for your gift of music, a very special and unexpected treasure! As I’ve said so often, it is a privilege to do the work that we do. Media Support Technician

Buena Vista University currently has an opening for a Media Support Technician in the Event Technical Services department. BVU seeks a qualified theater technician to assist with live performance and presentation events on campus. The qualified applicant will primarily be responsible for operating and maintaining theatrical lighting equipment, but also assisting with other aspects of event production. Qualified applicant will also be responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining multimedia classroom technology around campus. Good customer service skills required. High School diploma or equivalent is required and a bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. A background check will be conducted on the final candidate. Annual Great Boat Float

The Office of Student Affairs, Outdoor Adventure Club and Recreation Services would like to thank all the participants and volunteers that contributed to the success of the boat races this year. Five teams raced their unique and creative cardboard creations and many spectators cheered from the shore. Thanks again!

Host Families Desperately Needed

Host families are needed to provide an overnight stay the weekend of July 20th and 21st for Japanese high school students that are attending a summer English program at BVU. The students are from Showa Daiichi high school in Tokyo. This experience is rewarding for all and is a very valued experience for the students. Host families will be invited to a farewell dinner party the evening of July 24. AmeriCorps 2013-2014

The Office of Civic Engagement is currently collecting a list of students interested in the Iowa College AmeriCorps Program that we host on campus. Students commit themselves to 300 or 450 hours of service and upon completion receive $1,132 or $1,415 towards education expenses. Service projects can include, but are not limited to internships at non-profits, social work or education practicum hours, or general volunteering. Campus Wide Book Drive

A book is worth a thousand worlds. Please contribute to the Student M.O.V.E. sponsored drive this year all through finals week if you have either unused or used books. There will be boxes for deposit at the Information Desk and in the Campus Store. The books are sold online with proceeds going to a local charity or nonprofit. CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS

Cheer tryouts will be held on Sunday, June 9th, and Sunday, June 16th at 1pm in the fieldhouse. You only need to attend one of the sessions. If you are interested in trying out to become a memeber of the BVU Cheer Squad, please email Angie Johnson at johnson5@bvu.edu. Callers are required to work 12-15 hours a week but with very flexible times from 10am-8pm Monday-Friday. The Student Association of Social Workers is collecting shoes for Souls for Soles until May 23rd. Recepticles are located in Pierce-White, Social Science and Art, Dixion-Eilers, Swope, Grand and Liberty. Donate your unused shoes before the year ends!
