Remembering Lanny Grigsby

Lanny Grigsby, Class of 1960 and associate professor emeritus of mathematics, passed away on Aug. 3. He spent over five decades teaching every type of math offered at Buena Vista and served in several coaching positions for the Beavers.

Lanny Grigsby, Class of 1960 and associate professor emeritus of mathematics, passed away on Aug. 3, 2017 in Pipestone, Minn. A student, coach and professor, Grigsby was a steadfast and respected presence on campus.

As a student at Buena Vista, Grigsby played baseball, football and basketball. In 1960 he received his diploma and BVU teaching contract on the same day.

Grigsby spent over five decades teaching every type of math offered at Buena Vista, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus to numerical analysis, and mathematica; as well as mechanics in physics, basic programming and theory of baseball.

In addition to his longtime teaching career, he served in several coaching positions for the Beavers, including football, baseball and basketball, winning a handful of conference titles. He was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, August 7, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
