BVU Campus Event Will Launch Effort to Help Stop Gang-Related Violence in Chicago

Nov. 9, 2012

"Love Out Loud," an organization co-founded by Dominique Daily, a senior at Buena Vista University, is launching its "stop the violence" campaign at an event on campus Monday, Nov. 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Underground.

Dominique, a communication studies major for Chicago, and a friend, Dorshanay Williams, formed Love Out Loud in May as part of an effort to help stop the increasing gang-related violence in Chicago.

"Our goal is to educate, empower and inspire today's youth in the Chicago area and help them make wiser decisions that have an impact on them, their communities and future generations in positive ways," Dominique comments. The campaign has a goal of securing commitments from 15,000 young people to pledge to stop the violence in their communities.

"I believe it's important to stand up for a cause you believe in because it helps empower others to stand up," she says. "I believe violence can stop in Chicago, but it's going to take strong individuals to reach out to the people who are starting the violence."

Several BVU students and the Office of Civic Engagement, Office of Spiritual Life, and Office of Intercultural Programs are assisting with the Nov. 12 "Inspire a Heart to Love" event.
