Four Buena Vista University students culminated a charitable campaign of their own creation on June 26 by donating over $2,200 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa.
Senior digital media and graphic design major Grace Bodey of Belvidere, Ill. and senior digital media major Katy Rubino of Story City invited the BVU and Storm Lake communities together for a donation ceremony, and presented a check for $2,201.30 to Ashley Dockendorf, the Director of Community Development for Make-A-Wish Iowa. The event included both students thanking participants for donating to the cause, and helping a dream come true for a child with a life-threatening medical condition.
“I would encourage people to help Make-A-Wish or just volunteer in general because the joy you get from helping someone else is one thing, but seeing that it means the world to them just helps you know your actions are appreciated,” Bodey said. “This became way more than homework for us.
Bodey and Rubino, along with senior corporate communication majors Holly Frerk of Pocahontas and Conner Grupe of Trimont, Minn., took an Integrated Media Campaigns course with Jerry Johnson, assistant professor of digital media, this past spring. After investigating the key aspects of public relations and marketing, they set out to implement their classroom learning and grant a wish via their We Have A Dream Campaign. The students gained real-world experience as they designed the campaign’s brand, tracked its finances, monitored its web presence, and interacted with regional media outlets to publicize their main event: a festive pancake breakfast and silent auction with all proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish.
“It was really beneficial for us to see our textbook blossom out into this tangible thing that is really helping a child in Iowa,” Bodey said. “Doing this is something both that child and us media students will never forget.”
