Nov. 30, 2012
The Buena Vista University Concert Band under the direction of Jerry Bertrand, assistant professor of music, will present its annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel.
The program will open with “The Light Calvary Overture,” an overture written by Franz von Suppe in 1866. The featured work for the concert will be a performance of “Symphony No. 1 – New Day Rising” by Steven Reineke. The symphony describes in music the day in 1906 that the City of San Francisco was destroyed by an earthquake and fire. Reineke, associate conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, was commissioned by the Contra Costa Wind Symphony of Walnut Creek, Calif., to write a work to be performed on the centennial date of the San Francisco disaster.
Contributing to the spirit of the season, the concert band will perform “Polish Christmas Music” by Johan de Meij. This work was commissioned by The American School of the Hague for the 20th Annual International Honor Band and Choir Festival in 1995. The program concludes with a medley of traditional carols called “A Festive Christmas” by Kenny Bierschenk.
This holiday concert is free and open to the public.
