Tom Osborne, former University of Nebraska head football coach, will be the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for TeamMates of Storm Lake, an organization that conducts a mentoring program for students in the Storm Lake Middle School and the high school.
Approximately 45 Buena Vista University students volunteer as TeamMates mentors during the academic year, says Dr. Ashley Farmer-Hanson, director of civic engagement at BVU. The BVU students are members of BVBuddies, which is a branch of TeamMates of Storm Lake.
The “TeamMates Celebration” fundraiser will be held March 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner in the Grand Ballroom in the Siebens Forum at BVU. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, founded the TeamMates Mentoring program in 1991. The organization has over 100 chapters in Iowa, Nebraska and California serving more than 4,000 students in grades 3-12.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will help pay for ongoing expenses of the Storm Lake program, says Angie Woodford, TeamMates coordinator for Storm Lake Community Education. Tickets for the fundraiser are $45 per person, but there is no charge for BVU students who are mentors. Tickets may be purchased at the Community Education office at the Storm Lake school administration building, 419 Lake Ave.
