Freshman Sidney Beckman drilled a three-pointer as time expired in overtime against Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon which sent the Buena Vista women's basketball team to a thrilling 73-70 victory and their third straight win.
The Knights had a chance to take the lead with under 20 seconds left, but missed a layup opportunity and senior Malarie Gilley hauled in the rebound which led to Beckman's long range bucket as the buzzer sounded.
The three-pointer was Beckman's second of the game and the seventh for BVU in the contest.
Much like the game back in Storm Lake a matter of days ago, this one was close from the opening tip.
Wartburg held a 68-65 lead in the extra frame with 3:30 left to play before Gilley, who tallied a game-high 19 points in the contest, made two free-throws to cut the deficit to one. The two teams then went two minutes without scoring before Gilley's bucket, plus a foul, put BVU in front 69-68. She made the free throw to make it a 70-68 contest with 1:24 left.
The Knights tied things up at 70-70 with a jumper at the 1:00 mark, and after each team had chances to take the lead, it was Gilley hauling in the rebound after Wartburg's miss.
BVU led by as many as nine in the second half (56-47) before the Knights stormed right back with nine unanswered points following a timeout to even things up at 56-56 with under six minutes to go. From there, neither team was able to build much a lead down the stretch.
Gilley also hauled in a game-high eight rebounds, as the Beavers held a slight edge on the glass (46-44). Susan Kies followed with 14 points and six rebounds, as Lexi Fisher added 12 points and a game-high six assists.
