A photo of Schaller Memorial Chapel at Buena Vista University during a lightning storm in September has been selected by KTIV television for its 2013 Siouxland calendar.
The photo was taken by David Ekstrom, a senior digital media major from Odebolt.
To capture the image, David had his Nikon D800 camera set at ISO 200, 8 seconds, and F/2.8 on a tripod with a cable release. Since it is a long exposure, the camera picks up multiple streaks of lightning across the sky and it essentially paints light onto the image, he explains. “This is also the same principles of light painting, another long exposure photographic method. This particular image is a combination of four images stacked on top of each other in Photoshop to make a more powerful and interesting lightning storm.”
David’s photo was among hundreds submitted for the calendar, says David Washburn, director of programming and marketing at KTIV. About 25,000 copies of the calendar will be distributed and available for free at businesses throughout Siouxland after Thanksgiving.
