Christyn Abaray begins her first year as Director of Athletics for the Beavers in 2012-13 after having spent the last eight years at Swarthmore College (Penn.).
After being hired as an Assistant Director of Athletics, she was later promoted to an Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator in 2007. From that point, she supervised all sports and coaches and all fundraising accounts for the department. She also was the departmental Compliance Coordinator, a liaison with the Dean’s Office and an advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
In addition, Abaray spent one year as an Academic Coordinator in Intercollegiate Athletics at Miami University (Ohio), while also serving as a Physical Activities through Lifetime Sports (PALS) program coordinator. Over the years, she has also served on various NCAA committees, as well as a number of professional and volunteer organizations.
While working on her master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science (focusing in sports administration) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she served in various roles within its athletic department, including a year as an intern in the Athletics Business Office where she handled all deposits for the athletics department and reconciled team accounts.
A graduate of Washington University (St. Louis), Abaray earned a bachelor of arts degree in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. She was also a four-year starting defender on the women’s soccer team and earned All-UAA Conference First Team honors three times, All-Region First Team accolades in 1997, 1998, and 2000, while also being named an All-American in 1998. She was later inducted into the Washington University Hall of Fame in 2011.
Abaray and her husband, Chris, have one son, Jackson.
