The Buena Vista softball team saw its season to come to a close on Friday morning, as it fell, 6-1, in the consolation bracket to top-seed Luther College in the first game of the day.
Luther broke a scoreless game in the fourth with five runs on six hits, after being held to just one hit through the first three. The Beavers got one back in the fifth when sophomore Brooke Berkey (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) drove in Samantha Knudsen (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) with a sacrifice fly, after the Beavers had loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Lesa Turnquist (Alta, Iowa/Alta-Aurelia), who was on second tried to advance to third with the throw home, but was thrown out to end the inning.
The Norse added the game’s final run in the bottom half with a one-out double.
Freshman Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) went 2-for-3 to lead BVU at the plate, as Knudsen, Turnquist and Jordon Pilcher (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) also added one hit each.
Senior Chancey Wilcke (Battle Creek, Iowa/BC-IG), who played her final collegiate game, went the distance on the mound, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, while striking out one and walking one.
Buena Vista finishes its season at 17-17 overall. The game was also the final one in the careers of seniors Jami Webster (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer), Megan Feller (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) and Aphton Roberts (Primghar), Iowa/South O’Brien).
