Storm Lake, Iowa
The Buena Vista wrestling team got the benefit of hosting an additional home match on Friday night, and scored some key bonus points throughout the match to defeat visiting Simpson College, 33-19. The dual was the seventh-place meet as part of the newly created Iowa Conference Championship Duals.
BVU earned a forfeit at 125 pounds and then chalked up back-to-back pins from Cameron Mennenoh (Audubon, Iowa/Audubon) at 133 pounds and Steve Gutschenritter (Pacific Junction, Iowa/Glenwood) at 141 pounds to take the early 18-0 lead.
Tim Vore (Sioux City, Iowa/East) wrestled tough for BVU at 149 pounds despite falling 11-3. He was up against the same wrestler who pinned him in the first period when the two teams met back in late January. This time around, Vore came out and got the early takedown for a 2-0 lead and only trailed 6-3 in the third period.
Simpson’s win at 149 pounds made it 18-4 before Dustin Shinkle (Van Horne, Iowa/Benton Community) picked up his third pin of the year during the 157-pound match to extend BVU’s lead to 24-4.
The Storm then tallied a pin at 165 pounds and won by forfeit at 174 to get within 24-16.
Senior Brian Broll (Chaska, Minn./Waconia), ranked second in DIII this season at 184 pounds, was back in the line-up for the Beavers since capturing his 100th career victory back on January 9. He got a late takedown in the first period for the first points of the match and put the match away with a takedown late in the third to win 7-2.
Simpson then picked up a decision at 197 pounds before BVU sophomore Gable Bonner (Estherville, Iowa/ELC) put the finishing touches on the dual with a 41-second pin at 285 pounds for his 11th win of the year.
It was Bonner’s pin in the earlier dual which also gave BVU the six-point win over the Storm.
Buena Vista improves to 2-9 on the year, as the Storm dip to 1-14.
The Beavers will be off until next Sunday when they take part in the Augustan (S.D.) Open which is scheduled to begin at 9:00am. That will be the final regular season event for BVU, which will then compete at the NCAA Central Regional Tournament on March 2 at Five Flags in Dubuque.
