Women's Basketball Comes up Short against Wartburg

Feb. 13, 2013

Waverly, Iowa

Junior Malarie Gilley (Grand Junction, Iowa/East Greene) matched a career-high with 16 points with freshman Lexi Fisher (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) burying a trio of three-point buckets to add 11, but it was not enough in the end, as the Beaver women’s basketball team fell on the road to Wartburg College on Wednesday night, 71-58.

Gilley went a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and had 10 points at the half, as BVU trailed by just three, 29-26.

Wartburg, which shot just 35 percent in the first half, caught fire in the second, connecting on nearly 49 percent.

BVU used a quick run to start the half, taking a 35-31 lead nearly five minutes into it, before the Knights responded right back with a 15-2 spurt, covering the next five minutes, and led 56-47 with 10 minutes remaining.

A three-pointer from Fisher, followed by a layup for senior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig), got the Beavers back within four, but back-to-back three-point buckets gave Wartburg the largest lead of the night at 55-45 with eight minutes left.

Despite shooting just 29 percent from the field for the game, BVU didn’t go away, staying within eight with under seven minutes on the clock.  The Knights, however, scored eight of the game’s next nine points to go up 15 with 4:30 to play en route to the 13-point win.

Junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) hit two three-point buckets in the game for BVU and chipped in with eight points, but the Beavers connected on only 6-of-27 from downtown.  Kies now has 131 career three-point buckets and moves within three makes of tying Tracy Hartwig (2003-07) for third-place on the program’s all-time career list.

Defensively, senior Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) grabbed 18 rebounds, coming within one of her career-high set earlier this season.  She now has 235 total boards on the year, climbing up to sixth on the program’s all-time single-season list.

Carly Jacobs turned in a game-high 17 points to lead Wartburg, which improved to 8-5 in league play.

The loss by BVU, coupled with the win by Coe College at Luther College, officially eliminated the Beavers from the Iowa Conference Tournament race.  The team will look to wrap up its season with a win on Saturday over the Kohawks inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm with this year’s senior class being recognized prior to the start.
