The Buena Vista softball team used a big scoring inning in each game on Sunday morning to help boost it to a doubleheader sweep over Gustavus Adolphus (6-1 and 6-5). The games closed out the season-opening weekend of games inside of the Rosemount Dome.
In the opener, BVU took the early 2-0 lead with both runs in the bottom half of the first inning. After the Gusties got one run back in the second, the game was back-and-forth for the next three innings before the Beavers broke things open with a four-spot in the sixth. Sam Knudsen (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) had a two-run single followed later by a two-run double off the bat of Mikaela Millslagle (Lamoni, Iowa/Lamoni).
Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) worked around a one-out walk in the second to retire the side and pick up her second win of her young career.
Sophomore Jessica Stocker (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) tallied a team-high two hits, as BVU finished with only five. Sam Engleman (Hawarden, Iowa/West Sioux) also drove in a run and scored twice.
Falline allowed just four hits, while striking out three and walking three.
BVU had to rally late in game two, overcoming a 5-4 deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to hang on and win, 6-5.
Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) had the hot stick at the plate for BVU in the contest, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. She evened the game at 1-1 in the third with an RBI single before adding a two-run single in the fifth inning , giving the Beavers a 3-1 lead. She then got the rally going in the final frame, coming through with a big two-out double before later scoring the tying run on a double from Engleman. Stocker drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single.
Stocker added two hits in the contest and also drove in two, as BVU out-hit the Gusties, 11-6.
Freshman Faith Schmidt (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) went the distance on the mound, allowing just one earned run, while striking out two and walking four.
Buena Vista is 3-3 on the year and has a little time off before traveling to Northwestern College (IA) on March 14th for a non-conference doubleheader against the Red Raiders.
