The Buena Vista indoor track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2013 Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday afternoon with each team posting its best overall team finish in recent years. The men’s 4x800 meter relay team brought home the lone championship title in record-breaking fashion.
Beginning on the women’s side, senior Rachel Burnette (Irwin, Iowa/IKM-Manning) got BVU going strong on the final day with her fifth-place effort in the 55 meter hurdles in a career-best clocking of 8.68 seconds. Sophomore Maggie Marker (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the 55 meter dash, reaching the finish-line in a career-best 7.41 seconds. She just missed out on all-conference accolades by 0.08 seconds.
Marker didn’t miss out on earning those accolades, however, in the 200 meter dash, as she took third with a career-best mark of 26.38 seconds. Sophomore Casey James (Lenox, Iowa/Orient-Macksburg) also scored team points for BVU in the event, taking seventh with her personal-best time of 26.67 seconds.
After the 4x800 meter relay team took seventh, the Beavers then added a fourth-place effort to the table in the final race of the championships (4x400 meter relay), posting a time of 4:06.26; a mark that was just over a second out of a top-three performance. The team was made up of Marker, Burnette, Abby Hesnard (Sac City, Iowa/East Sac County) and Laura Eberly (Manning, Iowa/IKM-Manning).
After just missing out on scoring points for the team in the shot put on Saturday, Molly Hutchins (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) made it into the top-eight on Sunday, capturing eighth in the weight throw with a heave of 12.84 meters (42-1.05).
Overall, BVU tallied 40 points for the championships and took fifth overall in the team race. It’s the team’s highest finish and most points scored since taking sixth back in 2007 with 50.5 points.
Over on the men’s side, the 4x800 meter relay team of Andrew Smith (Brayton Iowa/Exira), Garrett Woodson (Dysart, Iowa/Union), Ben Berberich (Royal, Iowa/Clay Central-Everly), and Seth Woodson (Dysart, Iowa/Union), highlighted the day for the Beavers by winning the race with a new IIAC and school-record time of 7:52.15 seconds. It breaks the previous conference mark of 7:59.59 set back in 2009 and bettered its own mark of 8:03.04 set earlier this season during the BVU Open.
Both Seth and Garrett captured top-five finishes in the 800 meter run with Seth taking third overall in 1:56.17 and Garrett fifth at 1:56.61. Seth’s time was one of three times to surpass the facilities previous fastest time in the event of 1:56.20.
Freshman Andrew May (Webster City, Iowa/Webster City) gave the Beavers an eighth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles. Ryan Eberly (Manning, Iowa/IKM-Manning) ran 51.71 in the 400 meter dash and placed 10th overall, but was less than one second out of the top-three.
The 4x400 meter relay team closed out the championships for the Beavers with a fifth-place effort in 3:29.16.
Nolan Sampson (Cherokee, Iowa/Cherokee) earned the only points for the team in field events, taking fifth in the high jump by clearing his best height of the year at 1.96 meters.
As a team, BVU took seventh and finished with 35 total points. This follows a year in which it was eighth with only 21 points. It marks the team’s highest finish since 2009 when it took fifth with 89 points.
