Going on the road to play its weekend ‘home’ series against Simpson College didn’t seem to faze the Buena Vista baseball team too much on Saturday afternoon, as the Beavers posted a doubleheader sweep of the Storm to start the series. Senior Neil Eddie drove in all four runs in a 4-0 victory in game one before Jake Daniels came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th for a thrilling 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Eddie came through with a two-out RBI double in the second inning to give BVU the early 1-0 lead. He then reached on a squeeze bunt in the fourth which scored Jesse Munsterman from third.
Simpson, which out-hit BVU 8-5, was unable to come through with the big hit against junior starter Jon Ringblom. The Storm left 11 runners on base in the contest, including two in both the second and fourth frames before leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
Eddie, who finished 2-for-2, then added another key two-out hit in the sixth, driving in two with a single through the right side, pushing the margin to 4-0.
Sophomore Jake Bjorkgren relieved Ringblom to start the seventh and retired the final three hitters after allowing a lead-off single.
Munsterman also doubled and scored twice, with junior Joe Paletta adding a hit and a run scored. Dillon Plath scored the fourth run.
Ringblom, now 4-1 on the year, scattered seven hits over his six innings of work, while striking out eight and walking only one.
Game two was a pitcher’s duel throughout with each team trading runs in the sixth inning before the Beavers took advantage of a throwing error by the Storm in the 10th to secure the win.
Simpson, which again stranded 11 runners, broke a scoreless tie by drawing a two-out bases loaded walk for its only run.
Senior Ryan Scheetz got the rally started with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom half of the inning by doubling down the right field line. Munsterman followed with a single through the left side which drove in Scheetz and tied things up at 1-1.
After BVU stranded the winning run at second in the ninth, Daniels made sure that wasn’t going to happen again in the 10th. Weston Foxx led off with a single and made it to second a throwing error by the Storm third baseman on Paletta’s ground ball. Daniels then sent a single to right, scoring Foxx, who was able to slide around the catcher just before the tag was made.
Nich Schlecht turned in a 4-for-4 effort, including his third triple of the year. Foxx added a pair of hits with Scheetz’ double counting for the only other extra-base knock for the Beavers, who edged the Storm in hits, 10-8.
Brennan Holm pitched the final four innings to pick up his first win of the year for BVU, allowing just one base hit, while striking out one and walking one. Sophomore Ian Grigsby got the start and went the first six innings, scattering six hits, to go along with four strikeouts and four walks.
The sweep is the first time that the Beavers have swept a doubleheader from an IIAC foe this season. The wins improve BVU to 14-12 overall (6-8 IIAC). The team will look to win the series and go after the four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon. Game one is set to get underway at 1:00pm.
