Three players finished in double figures, led by Malarie Gilley’s (Grand Junction, East Greene) career-high 16, but it was Lake Forest that came out on top on Saturday evening, handing the Buena Vista women’s basketball team a 78-63 loss to close out the Washington University McWilliams Classic.
Gilley made 7-of-14 shot attempts from the field and both free-throw opportunities. She also matched a career-high with 12 rebounds, including a career-best nine offensive. Becca Pennington (Mount Ayr, Iowa/Mount Ayr) finished in double figures for the first time in her career, finishing with 14 points, while making a career-best four three-point baskets. Junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) was the third player in double figures, making a pair of three-point shots and tallying 10 points.
Senior Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) followed Gilley with a new career-high 11 rebounds, surpassing her previous high of 10 set last season against Wartburg College. Fellow senior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
For the game, Buena Vista shot 32 percent from the field, including an 8-of-29 effort from downtown.
The game was closely contested throughout a good part of the first half with neither team leading by more than three until a jumper from Pennington capped a 10-2 BVU run, giving the Beavers a 26-20 lead with under 10 minutes to play. Minutes later, Lehner gave the team its largest lead of the night (30-22) before the Foresters used a 19-1 run to close the half and take a 41-31 lead into the locker room.
BVU got as close as four early in the second half before Lake Forest, which shot 43 percent in the contest, built and 11-point lead with less than 12 minutes to play and extended it to 21 late in the half.
Liz Radtke scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Foresters (1-1).
Buena Vista is now 0-2 on the year and will now tip-off its home schedule by hosting the BVU Classic next Friday and Saturday. The team will play Northland College on Friday at 7:30pm and Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday at 3:00pm.
