The Buena Vista men's basketball team stepped out into the community on Sunday, Oct. 7 to serve omelettes at the Knights of Columbus Omelette Breakfast, held at the KC Hall in Storm Lake.
The event took place from 8 a.m. -12:30 p.m., with head coach Brian Van Haaften serving as the Honorary Chair. He was grateful for the opportunity.
"I think it helps our guys become better communicators in a random setting," says Van Haaften. "It is also a great opportunity for us to give back as a program and help out a great cause. We thank John Murray for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this fundraiser."
Players from the team rotated in throughout the morning to help prepare, cook and serve several omelettes along with members from the Knights of Columbus. They also had the opportunity to speak with those individuals who came through the line while waiting for the omelette to finish cooking.
Proceeds from the event are going toward helping Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.
"I really enjoyed the experience," said senior Wes Nordquist. "It was a fun way to interact with my teammates outside of school and basketball, and it's great to give back to the community and the people who come to our games."
Sophomore Grady Gallagher also took in the great experience.
"It was a great experience being able say thanks and give back to the community by serving the omelettes," he said. "The best part of serving was speaking with the members of the Knights of Columbus and several community members who support Buena Vista University."
The Beavers are inching closer to the start of their season with practice getting under way on Monday, October 15. The team will play its first regular season games of the year during the Carroll College Tournament in Waukesha, Wis., on Nov. 16 and 17.
