Buena Vista rallied from a 12-7 deficit with four runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth, but the Beavers came up just short in the end, falling to the Kohawks, 12-11.
BVU led 3-1 in the early going before Coe scored in the fourth thru seventh innings, including five in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. The Kohawks then followed with a run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Trailing 12-9 entering the final frame, Dillon Plath led off the inning by being hit by a pitch before scoring one batter later on sophomore Ryan Titman's RBI triple. Titman then scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-11 with no outs. Weston Foxx then walked, and after a strikeout, junior Ryan Scheetz scorched a liner down the first base line which was caught in the air by the first baseman, who then touched first for the double play to end the game.
Joe Paletta finished with two hits, including a three-run double in the first, and four RBI, while Foxx tallied three hits and two runs scored. Plath, along with Nick Schlecht and Ryan Titman, finished with two hits and two runs scored.
The two teams combined for 31 hits in the contest, including 11 for extra bases.
Sophomore Jon Ringblom (5-6) got the start and suffered the loss for BVU. In 3.2 innings of work, he was charged with six runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out two and walking one. Lucas Hadaway went the final 4.1 innings for the Beavers and was charged with six runs on nine hits.
Buena Vista is now 23-18 overall and will play fourth-seed Luther College at 10:00am on Saturday. Luther remains alive after winning three games on Friday. BVU defeated the Norse, 8-5, to open the tournament on Thursday.
