Buena Vista senior lefthander Michael Dirkx (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team as announced on Wednesday.
Dirkx, who became eligible for All-American voting after being tabbed as a Capital One Academic All-District First Team selection earlier this month, becomes the fifth player in the program’s history to be named an Academic All-American and the first since Nick Beard was a First Team selection back in 2002.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Dirkx, last year’s Elite 88 Award winner at the national championships, also became a three-time Academic All-Conference selection earlier this month, while also being named a Second Team All-Conference pitcher. He finished the year by going 3-2 overall this season with a 4.32 ERA in over 66 innings of work. During IIAC play, we went 2-2 in seven starts, including a pair of complete-game shutouts in 44 innings. League opponents hit only .196 against him, while he posted 36 strikeouts.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Dirkx holds a cumulative GPA of 4.0 and is a Biology major. He was one of two IIAC players to land a spot on any of the three teams; joining Coe College’s Scott DeAngelis on the Second Team.
