The Beaver softball team was looking build on its doubleheader sweep of Wartburg College last Saturday, but ninth-ranked Luther College made it tough for BVU, as the Norse handed the Beavers 2-0 and 10-0 setbacks, respectively, on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Luther, which scattered seven hits in the contest, was able to tally single runs in both the second and third innings, and that proved to be enough. Four of the seven hits came in those two frames alone.
BVU got a lead-off single from Stephanie Hayden in the fourth and a lead-off double by Brooke Berkey in the seventh, but both were stranded.
Freshman Jenna Falline dips to 6-5 overall. She went the distance and allowed both runs on seven hits, while striking out two.
It was all Luther in the finale, as the Norse got a pair of runs in the first before adding three in the fourth, one more in the fifth and four in the sixth en route to the six-inning triumph.
Hayden turned in two of the team’s hits for BVU, which was out-hit 11-3.
Faith Schmidt suffered the loss for BVU, allowing five unearned runs on five hits over 3.2 innings.
Buena Vista is now 11-13 overall (2-4 IIAC) with the team returning to action on Monday afternoon to make-up a doubleheader at No. 17 Central College (21-6, 5-1 IIAC). Game one is scheduled to get underway at 3:00pm.
