Buena Vista senior running back John Hill rushed for a career-high 122 yards on 12 carries, as the Beaver football team chalked up a season-high 395 yards of total offense, but it was Wartburg College (3-2, 1-1 IIAC) using a big second quarter en route to the 42-21 triumph on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights used a lengthy drive to start the game, going 88 yards, while taking more than nine minutes off the clock before getting a 13-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
BVU, however, stayed close, scoring its first points in the first half this season when Hill found a hole and ran up the far sideline 70 yards for a score with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter.
Wartburg came back with a pair of early touchdowns in the second quarter to push its lead to 20-7. The Beavers hung tough, getting a 15-yard touchdown run on a reverse by freshman Jalen Henningsen to get back within 20-14. The Knights then got a key five-yard touchdown run just before the end of the half to take a 27-14 advantage into the locker room.
The defense turned up the heat in the second half with neither team scoring points in the third quarter before BVU pulled as close as 27-21 after quarterback Bobby Brown connected with Adam Cave in the back corner of the end zone for his second touchdown catch of the year.
Wartburg wasted little time responding, going 67 yards in just seven plays on the ensuing possession, capped by a 30-yard touchdown pass to increase its lead to 35-21.
The Beavers threatened again, getting down inside the Knights’ 35-yard line, but a Wartburg interception ended the drive, and the Knights, who ran for 226 yards on the day, went on to add a late 13-yard rushing touchdown for the game’s final score.
Brown finished 20-of-39 through the air for a season-high 214 yards through the air. He was intercepted twice and sacked once. Senior Logan Lehrkamp, who entered the game with nine catches on the year, matched that total on the afternoon for a game-high 110 yards. Fellow senior Gunnar Wyatt followed with four catches and 41 yards.
Reese Thompson rushed for a game-high 155 yards to help lead Wartburg, offensively, while scoring a pair of touchdowns. JJ Hanus completed 19-of-25 attempts through the air for 195 yards and two scores.
Defensively, Nick Plueger was in on 15 total tackles for the Beavers. TJ Bruch tied with Kyle Arnold with nine total tackles, but registered a career-high 4.5 for a loss. Derek Schwartz was one of three players with eight stops, including three for a loss and two sacks.
Ryan Billings registered nine tackles to help pace the Knights.
Buena Vista is now 0-5 overall (0-2 IIAC) and will continue its home schedule next Saturday as it hosts Central College (2-3, 1-1 IIAC) for Homecoming.
