Buena Vista scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns and added two more in the second half, but it was the University of Dubuque scoring 18 fourth-quarter points to overcome a 10-point deficit and defeat the Beavers in overtime, 34-28. The game was the season finale for both teams.
The Spartans led 3-0 heading into the second quarter before BVU scored 14 unanswered points over a two-minute span midway through the period for a 14-3 advantage. The Beavers got on the board when Collin Mann scooped up a fumbled quarterback sneak on third-and-one and ran 57 yards the other way for the team’s first defensive score of the year.
After holding Dubuque to a three-and-out on its next possession, BVU then took advantage of solid field position following a short 18-yard punt into the wind, and marched 45 yards in under two minutes, capped by a 17-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Bobby Brown to Adam Cave. Bryce Bintner’s PAT then gave the team an 11-point lead.
The Spartans made it a 14-10 game heading into the half after a one-yard touchdown run with 18 ticks left to play.
BVU posted the game’s only score in the third quarter when sophomore Dylan Barrett scampered 11 yards for his team-leading eighth touchdown run of the year with six seconds left, giving BVU a 21-10 cushion.
Dubuque, which finished with 253 yards passing, got completions of 12, 43, and 11 yards to begin the ensuing drive, and with less than two minutes gone by in the fourth quarter, got a two yard-touchdown run and a two-point conversion to get back within three at 21-18.
BVU answered right back on the next drive, using a 14-play, 75-yard drive which used up more than seven minutes off the clock and got a 21-yard touchdown catch from Barrett to push the lead back to 10 with a little more than six minutes to play.
The Spartans kept the ball in the air and went 83 yards in just nine plays, getting a seven-yard touchdown pass to get back within three with under three minutes to go.
BVU then went three-and-out on the next drive, and the Spartans followed with a game-tying 38-yard field goal with exactly one minute to play, sending the game into overtime.
After Bintner had his 39-yard field goal attempt blocked on the first possession of overtime, the Spartans then got a one-yard touchdown run on their possession for the game-winner.
The Beavers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped, total just 242 yards of total offense. Senior John Hill rushed for a team-high 58 yards, while Brown was next with 50.
Through the air, Brown completed 9-of-26 attempts for 119 yards and the two scores. Cave hauled in three of those for 27 yards with senior Bo Darrow catching three for 20 yards.
Defensively, junior Brady Randall and senior Nick Plueger each tallied 15 tackles to help lead the way, with Randall also recording two sacks. Mann, who also intercepted a pass, was next with 11 tackles, as Derek Schwartz also finished in double-digits with 10.
Wyatt Hanus, who started just 5-of-12 passing for the Spartans, finished the game completing 23-of-39 attempts for 253 yards. Kyle Acker added 116 yards on the ground.
Buena Vista closes its season at 4-6 overall (4-3 IIAC), and the game also ended the playing careers of 12 seniors.
