Brian Broll (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) and Steve Gutschenritter (Pacific Junction, Iowa/Glenwood) each picked up individual titles, while Ivan Alvorez (Storm Lake, Iowa/Storm Lake) and Casey Paprocki (Omaha, Neb./Westside) tallied runner-up finishes, to help lead the Buena Vista wrestling team on Saturday during the Augsburg (Minn.) Brute-Adidas Open. A total of 12 wrestlers placed in the top-six for the Beavers.
A total of 330 wrestlers were in competition which is one of the largest small-school wrestling tournaments in the Midwest.
Broll, who improves to 7-1 on the year, wrestled in the 184-pound Gold Division bracket and earned four straight decisions en route to his championship, including a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Morningside’s Brian Block in the title bout. Block finished fourth at last year’s NAIA National Tournament and posting a 24-5 overall mark. Broll now moves within seven victories of 100 in his career.
Gustchenritter picked up a pair of pins and a decision en route to his title. The second of his pins came midway through the third period of his championships match against Central College’s Zach May. He is now 3-2 on the year.
In addition, Tim Vore (Sioux City, Iowa/East) also took part in that same bracket and placed fourth. He earned a first round by before falling just short of facing Gutschenritter in the championship when he dropped an 8-5 decision to May. He then lost by technical fall in his consolation match.
Alvorez, who wrestled in the 165-pound bronze bracket won by fall and by decision before losing his championship match by pin. Paprocki (184 Silver) won by pin and then tallied back-to-back decisions before falling 13-0 in the title match to Wartburg’s Gerard Roman.
In addition to Paprocki, Jared Bronaugh (New Market, Ala./Buckhorn) also wrestled in the 184-pound silver bracket and finished third. After a first round bye, he topped William Penn’s Brandon Blanchard, 4-2, before falling to Roman in the semifinals. He did bounce back in his consolation match to defeat Northwestern’s Chris Michael, 10-6.
Sophomore Seth Shatto (Estherville, Iowa/ELC), who already has a runner-up finish under his belt this season, placed third in the 157-pound silver bracket. He picked up a late pin in his first match before chalking up an 8-3 win. His bid for a championship came up a little short as he was edged 8-4 in his semifinal match, but did come right back and post a narrow 2-0 triumph to take third.
Buena Vista is now off until it opens Iowa Conference action by hosting third-ranked Coe College on Tuesday, November 27 at 7:00pm.
