Leadership Development Program

Buena Vista University embraces a mission that revolves around the development of competent and compassionate citizens. Our student leadership programs seek to help our students develop skills and tools for achievement in campus leadership positions as well as in life after BVU.

Students who have participated in past years report that it has helped them learn about themselves, connect with other students and the Universtiy, and develop critical skills.

We hope you'll choose to take advantage of the leadership programs -- not only to help you develop important skills that will serve you well as a student leader, but also to assist you in your quest to prepare for a productive career and civic leadership.

Schedule of Modules

In order to attain eight months of leadership training, a student's journey throughout the leadership program may look similar to the following schedule:

Freshman Year

Emerging Leaders I - November, January & March

This module offers students the opportunity to begin a journey towards becoming a well-rounded leader through self-exploration and discovery. Sessions include a leadership retreat, diversity defined, importance of volunteerism, components of good decision-making, and benefits of a mentor relationship.

Sophomore Year

Emerging Leaders II - October & February

This module, which builds on what students learned and discussed in Emerging Leaders I, focuses on learning about oneself and how we relate to others. Participants will discuss the value of diversity, more fully understand the importance of community service, develop creative problem-solving skills, and learn about role-modeling and mentoring and how it relates to leadership.

Junior Year

Emerging Leaders III - November & February

The third module in this series lets students develop their leadership skills through common reading and self-reflection, along with sharing and growth as a leader. Students will also learn how to develop constructive solutions and strategies for effective mentoring.

Senior Year

Emerging Leaders IV - Fall semester

As a culmination of the Emerging Leaders program, students will "give back" to the University in some meaningful way. Participants in this series will choose those topics they want to learn more about and which project(s) they want to become involved in and/or lead.
