Kendra Ramthun, an Arts Management/Theatre graduate, recently moved to New York City to work for theatre production company, Aruba Productions. After four months with Aruba, Kendra is moving on to a new job as a General Management Associate at Playwrights Horizons. Playwrights Horizons is one of the most respected new play development organizations, bringing plays like "Grey Gardens," "I am My Own Wife," and "The Heidi Chronicles" to Broadway.

Weare Wins Research Excellence Award

BVU alum Andrea Weare (2006) has been named a recipient of the Iowa State Unversity Research Excellence Award for her thesis research. The award is given to te top 10% of graduate theses and dissertations out of all of the colleges in the university. Only about 15 students, masters and PhDs combined, receive it. Andrea will receive her Master's from the Greenlee School at ISU in Journalism and Mass Communication this month.

Jessica Peiffer will be working as a Front of House Manager for the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, CT in June. The mission of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas is to create an internationally renowned festival in New Haven of the highest quality with world-class artists, thinkers and leaders, attracting and engaging a broad and diverse audience celebrating and building community and advancing economic development. The Festival is firmly established as one of the world's most significant arts festivals. Larson Tapped for Role in "Peacock"

Bethany Larson has been cast in a small speaking role in the film "Peacock," filming in Iowa in May and June. "Peacock" is directed by Michael Lander and will star Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page. The production company, Mandate Pictures, also produced "Juno" and "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium."

Dr. Robbie Ludy, Professor of Special Education had been appointed to the 2009 program committee for the Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). She will assist in the review and selection of presentations for the 2009 conference which will be held in Seattle, WA. Approximately 5000 individuals attend the CEC conference each year. Dr. Ludy is one of only thee individuals from the United States to be placed on this committee for the coming year.

Colt Cook and Adam Christians Present Research Papers Senior history majors Colt Cook and Adam Christians presented research papers at the 43rd Annual Phi Alpha Theta Student History Conference at the University of South Dakota on April 24. Colt presented his paper "The Only War He Could Fight: Robert E. Lee and the Civil War in Northern Virginia" and Adam presented "Japan's Manifest Destiny: The Growth of Japanese Imperialism". Colt and Adam did an outstanding job and both received high praise from history faculty from other institutions. Please congratulate them on their hard work and for achieving this outstanding intellectual accomplishment. - Dr. Feis and Dr. Bartholomew-Feis Cook Honored at Student History Conference Senior history major Colt Cook's research paper entitled "The Only War He Could Fight: Robert E. Lee and the Civil War in Northern Virginia" was selected by a faculty panel as the Best Paper in US History at the 43rd Annual Phi Alpha Theta Student History Conference at the University of South Dakota. This award is given by Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society for the best papers presented at regional conferences and to recognize excellence in historical research and writing. Over thirty papers were presented at the conference by students from Creighton, Northwestern, USD, SDSU, Augustana, University of Sioux Falls, and Southwest Minnesota State. Foreman and Gernhart to work on NSF chemistry research project

Congratulations to Keith Foreman and Zane Gernhart for being selected to work with Dr. Tim Ehler this summer on a National Science Foundation / Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center funded research project. They will spend most of the summer at Buena Vista University doing research on the project "Organosulfur Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gallium Arsenide Using Sum-Frequency Generation." They will also travel with Dr. Ehler to Golden, Colorado, to spend a week or two doing research in a laboratory at the Colorado School of Mines.

Wagner Interns at Project Morry Camp

Andre' Wagner, a junior social work major has an internship this summer working in New York with Project Morry Camp. Project Morry is a year-round youth development organization that provides to each child a multi-year commitment anchored by a superb residential summer camp experience. The children, for whom these experiences would not otherwise be available, benefit from a network of support and gain increased social skills, enhanced self-esteem, positive core values and a greater sense of personal responsibility.

Kehrli Accepts Position with New Conservatory Theatre Center

Krystal Kehrli, BV'07, has accepted a position with the New Conservatory Theatre Center in San Francisco to perform in the YouthAware production of "Gorgeous," a two-woman play that looks at how people think and feel about their bodies through time, and particularly how the media and peers affect how we feel about ourselves today. The play tours to middle schools in the San Francisco Bay area in May. It has long been Krystal's goal to work in childrens' theatre. In addition to performing in the play, Krystal will be leading post-performance discussions with young audiences. BVU Summer Science Research Winners

Congratulations to Grant Turner and Todd Wical, who have been awarded summer science research grants from BVU for the summer of 2008. Their selection was based on a competitive process which included a review of thoroughly documented research proposals developed and submitted by the student applicants. Mr. Turner will be working with Dr. Robb Dunbar on imaging effects of propofol on hippocampal GABA-a receptors. Mr. Wical will work with Dr. Melinda Coogan to investigate and model Escherichia coli, nitrate, and phosphate levels within Outlet Creek, Iowa.

Abby McDonald Awarded Prestigious Graduate Fellowship

Abby McDonald was recently awarded a 3M Fellowship to pursue her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Structural Biology (MCSB program) at the University of Minnesota. Abby was awarded a full tuition waiver and a departmental annual stipend of $24,500. In addition to her normal stipend, Abby will receive an extra $26,000 in salary from 3M that will be spread out over four years. Please congratulate Abby on an exceptional achievement!

Josh Abel Awarded Nature Conservancy Internship

Marshall Earns Internship from Children's Theatre Education Internship

Leah Marshall, a Theatre and English Education major, has received a paid internship for this summer from the Children's Theatre Education Internship at Spencer Community Theatre. Leah will be responsible for creating and implementing the children's theatre educational programming within the guidelines of the current curricula. She will serve as Production Manager for the younger children's theatre production, implement subsidiary educational workshops, give tours to touring children's theatre groups, and work with parents of the children's theatre group. Through this internship, Leah was also offered the position of Director for the Young Children's Production of "AristoCats." Congratulations Leah!

Congratulations to BVU sophomore Kayla Nagel. She was recently selected through a highly competitive process to participate in the University of Wisconsin Madison Summer Institute in Biostatistics. While in Madison Kayla will take part in a comprehensive six-week program for undergraduates in math and the quantitative sciences that introduces principles and applications of statistical methods in biomedical research. Kayla's tuition, room and board, and textbooks are paid for through a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

His grant application "Study of Organosulfur Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gallium Arsenide Using Sum-Frequency Generation" was funded by the National Science Foundation / Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center. Todd Wical has been invited to present his Raccoon River Watershed research project to the Raccoon River Watershed Association Board Members, Group Chairs, and community members in Des Moines on Saturday, March 1. The meeting will be held at DMACC with the focus being the aquatic health of this important watershed. Todd will be one of nine other conservationists, naturalists, professors, and governmental representatives who will also present data on the health of the Raccoon River.
