Green Accepted for Chicago Board of Trade Internship

Christopher Green has been accepted for a 2010 summer internship with the Linn Group, under the Chicago Board of Trade which is owned by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The internship will last 12 weeks from the 24th of May, ending in August.

Reding Accepts Elite Internship

Melody Reding, a junior athletic training major, has been awarded an internship with the J. Robinson Wrestling camps for the summer of 2010. Athletic Training students from around the country are interviewed and then selected to be part of this intensive camp based on their experience while in college and ability to work with high-level high-school athletes. Melody will begin her internship in Minneapolis, Minn. in June and will travel with the camp throughout the midwest and western part of the United States ending in August. Congratulations to Melody for being selected for this opportunity!

Schweller to Give Talk at Primatology Meeting

Dr. Ken Schweller, professor of Computer Science and Psychology, will give a talk at the June meeting of the American Society of Primatologists in Louisville, KY. He will be talking about the use of Lexigram boards with chimpanzees and bonobos.

Carrie New Lands Guthrie Theatre Internship

Carrie New, a senior Arts Management major, has received an internship at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Carrie will be working in the Development Department, helping with research for donors, working with the ticketing, donations and computer programing. She will also be assisting in planning special events at the Guthrie. The Guthrie is one of the top regional theatres in the United States and has one of the most competitive internship programs in the country.

Junior Computer Science Students Secure Summer Internships

Travis will be working at Schwan's in Marshall, MN, as a software engineering intern. Matthew has been invited to return to Solutions, Inc., in Spencer, IA, where he previous interned during the January interim term. Congratulations, Travis and Matthew!

Media Students Receive Award of Achievement From IMPA

The University Cable Network's production AmerICON: An Iconic Landscape received an Award of Achievement in the Student Production - College Documentary Category at the 2010 Iowa Motion Picture Association (IMPA) Awards in Des Moines on Saturday, May 1st. The student producers for AmerICON: An Iconic Landscape were the students in the 2009 Spring Electronic Media Production class and they are Kyle French, Mark Haugen, Darren Johnson, Christie Johnson, Grant Pedersen, Savi Tai and Lena Yoo. AmerICON profiled the Storm Lake Lighthouse, Audubon's Albert the Bull and Pocahontas' Indian Princess.

Computer Science Students Present Program to Ape Trust

Alex Pelelo and Ellen Hartstack traveled to Simpson College on May 1 to attend a conference on "Bonobo Human Discourse" sponsored by the Great Ape Trust of Iowa. At the meeting they presented a talk on "Creating Computer Storybooks for Bonobos" and demonstrated to ape researchers the program they had written.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Wind Goodfriend and psychology student Chase Barrick - they have written a book chapter together which was just accepted for publication. The chapter, titled "The Dark Defender," will be published in the book "The Psychology of Dexter," out this summer. The chapter discusses Freudian defense mechanisms used by characters in the Showtime TV show Dexter. This is Dr. Goodfriend's fifth chapter in the series of books on Psychology of Pop Culture, and the first she has co-written with a student.

Aaron Lockwood Takes First Place at Iowa Sociological Association Annual Meeting

Aaron Lockwood, a senior in Criminology and Criminal Justice, took first place in the academic poster competition at the Iowa Sociological Association Annual Meeting on April 24th. This poster is the result of original research conducted this spring. Aaron conducted a content analysis of the last statements of death row offenders in Texas between 2000-2010 using a framework of Terror Management Theory (TMT). The goal of this research was to expand upon a previously used coding scheme in an effort to better understand how those facing execution use specific defense mechanisms to avoid thinking about their impending death and instead leave one last impression on the world about who they are.

Senior Adrienne Haynes, and juniors Dan Mikels, Samantha Lewis and Brett Malone have been selected to represent Buena Vista University at the Okoboji Entrepreneurship Institute at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Okoboji this August. The students will be learning alongside students from Iowa's regent institutions through business simulations, new business start ups, and venture capital competitions. Assistant Professor of Management Joni Anderson serves as a faculty member along with northwest area business leaders.

Bolton Awarded Graduate Assistantship

Britney Bolton, a senior athletic training student, has been awarded a Graduate Assistant position at South Dakota State University. Britney has been accepted into the Master of Science program for Health, Physical Education and Recreation with an emphasis in Sport Pedagogy for the Fall 2010 semester. She will be working as an Athletic Training Graduate Assistant with the baseball and swimming teams at SDSU. Congratulations on your acceptance and position!

Veolia-Storm Lake Water Quality Research Scholarship

Congratulations to Cassandra Pauley, who is the 2010 recipient of the $500 Veolia-Storm Lake Water Quality Research Scholarship. Cassandra, a junior biology major, is currently researching Bisphenol A (a suspected endocrine disruptor) effects on fathead minnows at environmentally-relevant concentrations, which was the subject of her proposal.

Coogan Invited to Join Expert Panel

Dr. Melinda Coogan has been invited to join the Raccoon River Basin Water Quality Master Plan Expert Panel, along with 19 other state of Iowa natural resource specialists, to work toward plan implementation for restoration and maintenance of a sustainable watershed. The panel was selected in response to the USDA-initiated $320 million financial assistance for voluntary projects in priority watersheds as part of the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiatives.

Schaechterle's Short Story Wins "Best of" Award

Inez Schaechterle's short story "Passing Down," published in CTHULHU UNBOUND V.2 (available in the BVU library) received Honorable Mention in editor Ellen Datlow's Best Horror of 2009 list, along with stories by such notables as Joyce Carol Oates and Stephen King.

BV County Photo On Exhibit at Sioux City Art Center

A panorama of Buena Vista Country goes on display in the main gallery of the Sioux City Art Center beginning April 29. The 20 by 33 inch panorama, entitled "520th West of M50," will be displayed in the gallery with other art pieces published in this year's Briar Cliff Review. The photograph is from a series on Buena Vista County by Bruce Ellingson, professor of Media Studies at Buena Vista University. Ellingson has more than a dozen of his large-scale panoramas on display in Storm Lake at the United Community Health Center and at Methodist Manor. "520th West of M50" is from his ongoing photographic series, which documents the rural areas of Buena Vista County and Storm Lake.

Ellingson has been granted a sabbatical from Buena Vista University this fall and will be touring national parks west of the Mississippi to continue his large-scale panoramic photography. His images can be seen at his flickr website:www.flickr.com/photos/bruceellingson/. A Gallery Reception will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 29 at the Sioux City Art Center to view the artwork of this year's Briar Cliff Review. The artwork will be on display at the Art Center until July 3.

Michael Bahr Presents "Truman at War" Paper

Michael Bahr, senior political science major from Iowa Falls, presented a paper at the "Truman at War" conference held at the Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Mo. on April 2. Michael wrote his paper, "A Time of Decisions: Truman, FDR and the policy of Unconditional Surrender," for his History 390 class on America and the World Wars, taught by Dr. William Feis, professor of history. Michael was the only undergraduate student to attend the conference, which was primarily for graduate students and Truman scholars. Congratulations, Michael.
