Buena Vista University is a learning-centered academic community that seeks to celebrate and strengthen connections within the curriculum, the college community and the world at large.

BVU emphasizes student learning, holistic personal development, and the enhancement of civic responsibility. Founded in 1891, the independent university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Buena Vista University is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Buena Vista University has offered post-graduate programs since 1995.  The Graduate Program at BVU offers Master's Degrees in the education field.  A master of science in education, a master of education in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in effective teaching and instructional leadership or teaching English as a second language are offered, with programs leading to Iowa licensure.
