Transferring Credits to BVU
This guide is designed to help prospective students see how courses at your community college may equate to courses and requirements at BVU. Transferred coursework may be used to satisfy institutional course requirements in the major, minor, concentration, general education or elective categories. Degree requirements and course descriptions do change and these documents are subject to periodical updates. Therefore this guide is based only upon the catalog year noted and is unofficial. Official evaluations will be performed upon receipt of all official college transcripts and/or upon enrollment at BVU.
Current BVU students may also utilize this guide. However, be reminded that students desiring to enroll in another post-secondary institution with the intent of applying credits earned to a BVU degree program must secure written approval in advance of taking the course.
Buena Vista University accepts a maximum of 68 semester hours of credit from 2 year institutions. Depending on programs of study and degrees awarded, we may accept less than 68 hours. A maximum of 16 hours of vocational/technical credit will be accepted.
Special note for courses going toward the Elementary Education or Education Core areas: Buena Vista University requires portfolio artifacts for certain courses (listed below) to verify the INTASC competencies required by the Iowa Board of Education. Students transferring these courses in will need to either submit the required portfolio pieces, or retake the course with Buena Vista.
Courses requiring Portfolio Artifacts: EDCO 250, EDCO 260, EDCO 279/280, EDCO 290, EDCO 300/301, EDCO 401, EDCO 369/370, EDUC 317, or EDUC 371, EDUC 410, Secondary Methods, and Student Teaching.
The catalog year of the community college courses is noted at the top of each document. For previous year's courses or courses not listed, please consult BVU.
