Mark Shea, Director of Student Success
Mark Shea is a December 1994 graduate of Buena Vista College with a degree in Elementary Education. Shea served as a substitute teacher and teacher associate at Storm Lake Middle School after graduating from BV before returning to his alma mater as an Admissions Counselor in November 1995. Shea spent 8 years in the admissions office at Buena Vista University and left to pursue other opportunities in 2003. He served as the Director of the Gingerbread House Child Development Center and the Access Coordinator for a rural health care grant before coming full circle with a return to the BVU Admissions Office in November 2007.
Shea spent two years in the Admissions Office and then was given the opportunity to spearhead the university’s retention efforts with the creation of the Office of Retention Services September, 2009. The position title was changed to Director of Student Success in April 2011.
Shea lives in Galva, Iowa with his wife and two boys. He is very active in his church as a Bible Study and small group leader, children’s ministry and nursing assistant at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta, Iowa. Shea’s community involvement includes Rotary Club Board member, a mentor through the Storm Lake School’s Connections Mentoring program and a member of the Buena Vista and Cherokee County Foster Care Review Board. He has also coached many sports programs throughout the years including college and high school track, middle school girls basketball and youth baseball. Shea is also the Public Address Announcer for the BV Beavers home football games and Alta-Aurelia Cy-Dogs Youth Football Club.
