The Foundational Skills graduation requirement in mathematics requires incoming students to be placed in one of three categories:

Category One

Review and conceptual development in arithmetic-oriented areas needed: fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages, basic geometry, signed numbers.

Category Two

Review and conceptual development in algebra related areas needed: algebraic concepts, factoring, solving equations, graphs and graphing, exponents and radicals.

Category Three

Basic arithmetic and algebra skills are adequate to proceed to other Mathematics courses.

Placement is currently being determined on the basis of each student's ACT Mathematics score:

Category One

ACT Mathematics score 18 or lower. (Must begin in MATH 050 Basic Mathematics, proceed to MATH 100 Algebra Review, and then to an approved "Level 3" Mathematics course.)

Category Two

ACT Mathematics score between 19 and 24 inclusive. (Must begin in MATH 100 Algebra Review, and then proceed to an approved "Level 3" Mathematics course.)

Category Three

ACT Mathematics score 25 or greater. (May proceed directly to an approved "Level 3" Mathematics course.)

BVU recognizes that a variety of factors (when the ACT was taken, the amount and level of mathematics courses taken subsequent to the ACT testing, etc.) can potentially lead to the ACT Mathematics score being an inaccurate indicator of mathematics knowledge.

  • For students who are content with their mathematics placement based on the ACT Mathematics score as described above, no action is required.
  • For students who feel that their ACT Mathematics score (and consequent placement, as indicated above) does not appropriately reflect their mastery of mathematics may opt to take the BVU Mathematics Placement Examination. The examination will be offered one hour prior to the beginning of the Summer Orientation Days activities. Placement based on results on the examination will override placement via the ACT Mathematics score.

Important Note

  • Students wishing to take the BVU Mathematics Placement Examination must sign up for the examination prior to the day of the testing.
  • This will be the only opportunity for students to opt to take the BVU Mathematics Placement Examination.
