Band Presents Spring Concert, Featured Soloist

The Buena Vista University Concert Band, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand, assistant professor of instrumental music, will present its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus.

The concert band’s portion of the program will include: “Beau Ideal March” by John Philip Sousa, “Satiric Dances” by Norman Dello Joio, “Escape from Plato’s Cave” by Stephen Melillo and “Three Klezmer Miniatures” by Philip Sparke.

The feature soloist with the BVU Concert Band will be French horn player JD Shaw. He will perform “Fantasie” by Franz Strauss, “Mystic Dance” by Rick DeJonge and “Theme for ‘Laura’” by David Raksin.

Shaw is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches French horn and is assistant director of bands. He received a bachelor’s degree in music from Wichita State University and a master’s degree in music from the Eastman School of Music.

Known throughout the world as a founding member, music programmer and arranger for the Boston Brass from 1995-2009, Shaw has also performed in the Rochester Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Missouri Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic and the Boston Pops. He has also been a featured performer on NPR’s “Performance Today” and the CBS “Morning Show.”

As an active performer and prolific arranger, Shaw has recorded over fifteen albums encompassing diverse musical styles from the classical, jazz and Latin genres. A notable recent project featured the Boston Brass recording the “Stan Kenton Christmas Carols” with many well-known brass players, such as Scott Hartman, Jens Lindemann, Scott Thornburg, Jeff Nelsen and Sam Pilafian.

Shaw has presented numerous clinics and workshops for music educators, as well as master classes for students of all ages and levels. In addition to his credentials as a horn performer and teacher, he is the Brass Program Director and Music Arranger for the Phantom Regiment, the reigning Drum Corps International World Champion.
