Back roads

From the airport, you want to go NORTH and follow the signs to get on 235W. You are likely to go through a part of the downtown area on your way there.

Take 235W to I-35N, and get on I-35N. You will curve right and go north for a few miles. Watch for the exit sign for Hwy 141. This exit is a hard curve going right off the interstate. It merges with Hwy 141 heading north. Follow this highway north and west until you get to Perry.

In Perry, you will come to a stop light that is the intersection of Hwy 141 and Hwy 144. Turn RIGHT and follow Hwy 144 north through town. Hwy 144 will carry you north and west some more, and you will come to Grand Junction. Follow Hwy 144 (curves hard right), and turn LEFT before heading into the downtown blocks of Grand Junction. You will cross a railroad track and come to a stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 144 and Hwy 30. Turn LEFT on Hwy 30, heading west.

Hwy 30 will take you west to Carroll. You will pass the courthouse and downtown district in Carroll and head out of town. When you approach a stoplight with a Burger King to the left, take the RIGHT-hand lane as it curves NORTH. This is Hwy 71, and you will stay on this until Storm Lake.

When you get to Auburn, you will have a stop sign that you turn LEFT at. Keep going WEST through Lake View and watch for the sign that indicates that Hwy 71 is turning NORTH. Turn RIGHT to follow Hwy 71. You will go through a little town called Early. After you leave Early, you will be approaching Storm Lake. You want to watch carefully for the turn off for Storm Lake. It will be immediately before the railroad track on your LEFT, but it is easy to miss. Turn LEFT here. This is Hwy 7, but it also becomes Lakeshore Drive as you enter Storm Lake.

Follow Lakeshore Drive through the stoplight. The speed limit here is 25 mph, so be careful! When you come to a stop sign, you will be at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Lake Avenue. Turn RIGHT onto Lake Ave. (This is our "main street") Follow Lake Ave north past Church Corners, over the railroad tracks, into downtown, past Bank Corners. You will go through several stop lights on your way to the Amerihost. You will pass a Hy Vee, Subway, gas stations and Amerihost Inn will be to your left. There will be a Super Wal-Mart across the street and to the north of the Amerihost Inn.

Interstate

From Des Moines, take I-35N. Stay on I-35N until you reach Hwy 20. (You will pass cities such as Ankeny, Ames, Story City) You will want to go to West (towards Fort Dodge), so take the exit for Hwy 20 West. (It is a right lane turn but you circle around to head west again)

Hwy 20 West will be 4-lane until you reach Fort Dodge, then it becomes 2 lane. Stay on Hwy 20 West.

You will go through towns such as Rockwell City, Lytton, and Sac City. After Sac City, you will be a few miles away from Hwy 20 "ending." Once you reach this intersection, turn RIGHT onto Hwy 71. On Hwy 71, you will go through a little town called Early.

After you leave Early, you will be approaching Storm Lake. You want to watch carefully for the turn off for Storm Lake. It will be immediately before the railroad track on your LEFT, but it is easy to miss. Turn LEFT here. This is Hwy 7, but it also becomes Lakeshore Drive as you enter Storm Lake.
