Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Demetrius Heard developed a passion for helping people. While on a campus visit during his senior year of high school, Demetrius decided that BVU was the perfect place to combine his passion with his academic interests.

Academic discovery

In his first-year seminar class, Demetrius realized an interest — and talent — for storytelling. He learned journalism theories and skills in his digital media courses and was a founding member of BVU's chapter of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. Demetrius decided that his desire to help people fit perfectly with his talent for sharing others' stories and declared a major in digital media. Learn more about academics at BVU...

Hands-on experience

Demetrius put his knowledge and skills to practice on KBVU, the student-run radio station, and one of his broadcasts even received a first-place award from the Iowa College Media Association! He also caught the attention of a Storm Lake radio station, and gained professional experience creating commercial spots and learning about radio sales during his January internship. Performing with the team and the troupe

With 19 NCAA athletic teams, several music and theatre ensembles, and more than 50 student organizations, Demetrius had no trouble staying active outside the classroom. He was on both the football and wrestling teams, and, to top it off, Demetrius was cast as "Charles, the wrestler" in BVU theatre's production of William Shakespeare's "As You Like It." Home away from home

When Demetrius attended BVU's Cultural Leadership Conference as a high school student, he took note of the community's friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Though he would be several hours from his hometown, Demetrius knew he would fit in at BVU. And he sure did — he was crowned the 2013 Homecoming King!
