Buena Vista freshman Mary Jane Ferguson (Surrey, British Columbia/Southridge) highlighted the weekend for the women’s tennis team as she placed second in the Flight C singles bracket during the Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament, which concluded on Saturday afternoon.

Ferguson, who ends the fall season at 11-6, allowed just four total points in her first four matches to advance into Saturday’s championship match against the University of Dubuque’s Ashley Schlueter.  She took the first set of that match 6-4 before dropping the second 7-5.  Schlueter then ended Ferguson’s bid for the title with a win in the third set tiebreaker.

Also in the Flight C bracket for the Beavers, Kelli Kroepel (Shenandoah, Iowa/Shenandoah) picked up a pair of victories before falling a quarterfinal bout.

Senior Emily Gutschenritter (Red Oak, Iowa/Red Oak), the top-seed in the Flight B bracket, had her fall season come to an end in her first match, as she fell 6-3, 6-3 on Friday to Wartburg’s Michelle McKenzie.  Teammate Hailey Henrichs (Beresford, S.D./Beresford), seeded third, dropped a heartbreaking match in a third set tiebreaker in round two and finishes her fall campaign at 8-6 overall.

Elizabeth Heffernan (Sioux City, Iowa/Bishop Heelan) notched her eighth win of the year in her first round match on Friday before her season ended with a loss in a third set tiebreaker to Cornell’s Kathleen Ellis.

Henrichs and Gutschenritter, seeded fourth in Flight B doubles, teamed up and made a run at a title, recording wins in their first two matches before suffering a 9-8 (5) loss in the quarterfinals.  The duo ends their fall season at 5-11 overall, with all five wins coming in their last six matches.

Ferguson and Tasha Nelson (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley), seeded second in the same bracket, picked up an 8-4 win their second round match before being dealt an 8-4 loss in the quarterfinals.  The tandem finishes with six wins on the year.

The tournament concludes the fall season for the Beavers.
