
The Buena Vista wrestling team took the mat inside of Siebens Fieldhouse for the final time in 2011-12 on Saturday, but came up a little short against 18th-ranked University of Dubuque, falling 27-12 in Iowa Conference action.
Dubuque grabbed an early 3-0 lead when Andre Taylor, who was wrestling his first match of the season, hung on to top #6 Austin Mogg (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) at 125 pounds, 3-2.
BVU then squared things up on match later when senior Mike Berardesco (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township), who was wrestling his final collegiate home match, got a takedown as time expired in the first period and then went on to top Marcus Ingalls-Rivera, 3-0.
The Spartans, who improved to 2-2 (1-0 IIAC), went on to win five straight matches to push their lead to 23-3 heading into the 184-pound bout.
Junior Brian Broll (Chaska, Minn./Waconia), who’s ranked fifth in the latest poll, got an early escape in the third period and went on to win a narrow 1-0 decision to improve to 28-3 overall this season.
Senior Joe Klinkel (Ames, Iowa/Ames), who was also wrestling his final collegiate match inside of Siebens Fieldhouse, fell 9-1 at 197 before sophomore Matt Sefick (Alta, Iowa/Alta) improved to 14-7 overall with a pin just 58 seconds into his heavyweight match against Nate Criston.
The Beavers dip to 3-5 overall (0-3 IIAC) and will stay in IIIAC action next Tuesday, January 24, with a road dual at Simpson College (4-7, 0-3 IIAC).
