Three starters scored in double figures for the Buena Vista women’s basketball team on Saturday night, but it wasn’t quite enough, as the Beavers fell at home to the University of Dubuque on Play4Kay Night, 74-58.
Senior Jessica Christensen led the charge with 15 points, including a pair of three-point buckets, while also hauling in six rebounds. Fellow senior Laura Hilby also made a pair of long range shots and followed with 13 points and two steals, while junior Brooke Wehle went 6-of-6 at the free-throw line to chip in with 12 points, as well as a team-leading four assists.
BVU made 13-of-15 at the charity stripe for the game, but connected on just 32 percent overall from the field.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 16-5 lead and continued to lead by eight (27-19) with under three minutes to play in the first half. Christensen nailed one of her three-pointers to help spark a quick run which brought BVU back within four with just more than a minute before the break.
A pair of Wehle free-throws brought the margin within three before the Spartans hit one of their three first-half three-pointers en route to a 32-26 halftime lead.
The game was back-and-forth at the start of the second half, with Dubuque hanging onto only a four-point lead (44-40) seven minutes in. The Spartans would push the margin up to eight and maintain that lead until taking a 56-46 lead with under nine minutes to go in regulation. From there, BVU was unable to get any closer than 10.
Mollie Whiting scored a game-high 18 points for Dubuque (14-10, 9-6 IIAC).
Buena Vista is now 10-13 overall (5-9 IIAC) and will close out its regular season home schedule this upcoming Wednesday, February 15, against Luther College at 6:00pm.
