The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Basketball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), were announced on Tuesday, and Buena Vista senior Laura Hilby (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) has landed a spot on the Third Team.
The Capital One Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 D-III Academic All-America® teams program.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Hilby made the ballot for Academic All-American voting after being voted to the Academic All-District First Team earlier this season. She is the only Iowa Conference player selected on any of the three All-American teams and becomes the second Academic All-American for BVU athletics this year. She’s also the first for the women’s basketball program since Margo Muhlbauer was a Second Team selection in 2010.
It was a career-year on the court for Hilby this season, who finished second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game. She came into this season, turning in only 7.2 per game. After making only 27 three-point buckets during her first three seasons, she became one of the team’s potent long range threats this season, making a career-high 44 shots from beyond the arc and ranking sixth in the league, converting 40.4 percent.
She scored in double figures in seven of the team’s final eight games this season, including a career-high 21 points at Simpson College.
Hilby, the daughter of Mike and Jan Hilby, is an Accounting and Corporate Math major with a 4.00 GPA.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
