Women's Basketball Edged by Duhawks on Monday Night

The Buena Vista women led by as many as 13 in the second half on Monday night against visiting Loras College, but it was the Duhawks taking advantage of 38 shots from the free-throw line en route to a 68-59 Iowa Conference victory over the Beavers inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

Senior Jessica Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) was the only Beaver to score in double figures, tallying 11 points, including three long range buckets, while fellow senior Amanda Roder (Remsen, Iowa/St. Mary’s) followed closely with nine points, as well as a team-best nine rebounds. Freshman Jordan Henningsen (Alta, Iowa/Alta) also chipped in with nine points, as junior Brooke Wehle (Denison, Iowa/Denison-Schleswig) led the way with a game and career-high 10 assists.

The Beavers held the Duhawks to only six first half field goals, but saw Loras go 12-of-15 at the free-throw line.  BVU was called for 13 fouls, compared to only three on the Duhawks and shot only four free-throws, but did take a 27-25 lead into the half.

BVU tightened up its defense at the start of the second half, holding Loras to only two field goals over the first seven minutes and building a 13-point advantage at 42-29.  Loras then made a three-pointer to get back within 10 and start a 16-2 run and taking a 45-44 lead with under 10 minutes to play.

The game was then tied four times over the next five minutes, before Loras, which went 28-of-38 at the charity stripe for the contest, scored 10 its final 12 points at the charity stripe over the final four minutes to hang on for the win.

Kelly Rogowski led all scorers with 19 points for the Duhawks, which improved to 9-7 (4-3 IIAC).

Buena Vista dips to 8-8 on the year (3-4 IIAC) and will return to action on Wednesday night when the team takes the road and travels to the University of Dubuque for a 6:00pm tip-off.
