Janet Berry joined Buena Vista in 1992 as the head women's basketball coach and will enter her 21st year at the helm in 2012-13.  She'll enter the campaign with an overall career record of 319-206, including a 210-128 mark during Iowa Conference games.

A five-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, Coach Berry's squads have won at least 17 games in seven of the last 10 seasons.  BVU has ranked either first or second in the IIAC in scoring offense in seven of the last eight seasons, while ranking in the top-three in field goal shooting in five of the last six years.  The team has missed the Iowa Conference Tournament only once since the event was started in 1998-99.

Berry's squads have also consistently performed well in the classroom. Seven years ago, the team topped the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA III. The award recognizes the nation's highest team grade point averages for the past season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member head coaches. She has had four of her players win NCAA post-graduate scholarships.

Berry attended Iowa State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education and received her master's degree from Mankato State University, Mankato, Minn. Berry is also an assistant professor of exercise science at BVU.

Janet and her husband, Steve, are the parents of two sons, Blake and Brock.

  • Led BVU to the Iowa Conference basketball championship in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2005.
  • Led the BVU basketball team to a berth in the 2005, 2004, 1997, 1996, and 1995 NCAA Division III National Basketball Tournament with overall records of 25-3, 27-3, 23-5, 19-7, and 18-7 respectively.
  • Named Iowa Conference "Coach of the Year" in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2005.
  • Has coached four NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship winners.
  • Named WBCA West Region Coach of the Year in 2005.
  • Was 51-17 in three years at Marquette High School in West Point. Named "Coach of the Year" for volleyball twice.

Dana Lehner, Assistant Coach

Dana Lehner begins her second season as the top assistant on the women's basketball staff in 2011-12.

Prior to making her way into the full-time position with the Beavers, she served one season as a volunteer coach in 2009-10.  In addition, Lehner served as the head volleyball coach at Newell-Fonda High School during the fall of that year and was named the 1A District Coach of the Year.  She also received the E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award for demonstrating great character and leadership in her coaching.

Other high school coaching duties she has been involved with include assistant girls basketball coach at South Sioux City High School in 2007-08 as well as at Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2008-09).  She does have prior collegiate coaching experience, having served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Briar Cliff University in 2006-07.

A graduate of Briar Cliff, Lehner earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, while also playing basketball for the Chargers all four years.  As a senior, she served as a co-captain and was named First Team All-GPAC peformer as well as earning Honorable Mention All-American accolades.
