



After winning a hard-fought five-set match on Friday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse against the College of St. Mary, the Buena Vista volleyball team was back out on the court on Saturday afternoon, splitting a pair of non-conference matches during the Grinnell College Triangular. The Beavers topped Illinois College in their opener, 3-1, before falling by that same score to the host Pioneers.
Illinois College took the first set from the Beavers, 25-21, before BVU stormed right back to win the next three, 25-23, 25-14, and 25-21. Complete stats from that match are currently not available.
The Beavers fell behind 2-0 to the Pioneers to wrap up the day, including a thrilling 31-29 setback to begin the match. BVU stayed alive by winning the third set, 25-23 before falling 25-17 in the fourth.
Kirsten VanZuiden (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper Catholic) had a solid match offensively for BVU, turning in 19 kills, with Kacie Woodley (Laurens, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon) and Lacie Drennan (Larrabee, Iowa/Cherokee Washington) next with 11 and 10, respectively. Courtney Van Haaften (Alta, Iowa/Alta) dished out assists on 46 of the team’s 54 kills. Defensively, Drennan completed her double-double with a match-high 23 digs, while fellow senior Kelsey Essick (Cherokee, Iowa/Cherokee Washington) added 16.
Buena Vista is now 9-16 overall and will take the court again when it hosts Coe College on Wednesday, October 19 for Parent’s Night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse. The junior varsity match gets underway at 6:00pm with the varsity to follow at 7:30pm.
