Volleyball Edged 3-1 by College of St. Mary

The Buena Vista volleyball team tallied a season-high 51 kills on Friday night against the College of St. Mary, but the Flames hung on in the end for a 3-1 victory inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.

CSM took the opening set 25-20 before the Beavers rallied to even the match with a 25-22 triumph in the second.  BVU was facing set point in the third set before the Flames rallied back to edge the Beavers, 27-25.  After trailing late in the fourth set, BVU rallied back within 22-21, but the Flames scored three of the final four points for the four-set triumph.                                  

Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) led all players with a match-high 16 kills, while freshman Abby Hinrichs (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) followed with a career-high 10.  As a team, the Beavers finished with a season-best attack percentage of .328.  Sophomore Courtney Van Haaften (Alta, Iowa/Alta) dished out 31 assists and also tallied seven kills, while chalking up nine digs, defensively.

Sophomore Chelsea Gubbels (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper Catholic) posted a team-leading 11 digs, while junior Jena Peters (Lake Park, Iowa/Harris-Lake Park) turned in two solo and three assisted blocks.

Kaylee Wallace and Jessica Kuehner led the Flames (4-10) with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Buena Vista is now 1-10 on the year and will take the court again on Wednesday night when it travels to the University of Dubuque for an Iowa Conference match-up at 7:30pm.
