Junior Britney Kubik (Martensdale, Iowa/Martensdale St. Mary’s) came within an out of throwing a no-hitter and sophomore Stephanie Hayden had four hits to help lead the Buena Vista softball team to a commanding 15-0 victory over SUNY Purchase (NY) to end the day on Thursday. That came after the team dropped a tough 1-0 decision against the College of St. Benedict in the opener.
Kubik didn’t allow a single hit until a two-out single in the fifth inning. She then got the next batter to ground into a force out at second to end the game. The only base runner prior to that was a one-out single in the first. It marks her first complete-game and complete-game shutout in a Beaver uniform.
Hayden, who doubled for one of her four hits, was also one of five players to drive in at least two runs in the contest. She also scored four times. BVU out-hit SUNY, 18-1, overall.
The Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one, scored another in the second and seven more in the third to break things wide open.
St. Benedict scored a run in the second and made it stand to edge the Beavers. BVU threatened in both the first and sixth innings, but left the bases loaded each time.
Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) suffered the hard-luck loss, going the distance and allowing just the one run on six hits and walking two.
Buena Vista is now 9-7 overall and looks to move its win total into double-digits as it ends its spring trip on Friday with games against the University of Chicago and St. Thomas, respectively.
