It turned out to be a power surge for the Buena Vista softball team on Saturday as it opened its 2013 home with a doubleheader Iowa Conference sweep of visiting Wartburg College by scores of 4-2 and 14-1 (5 innings).
Freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) improved to 6-3 on the year with her complete-game five-hitter.
Junior Sam Engleman (Hawarden, Iowa/West Sioux) tripled to lead of the second and then scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jessica Stocker (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle) pushed the margin to 3-0 an inning later when she singled through the right side, scoring Brooke Berkey (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) and Britney Kubik (Martensdale, Iowa/Martensdale St. Mary’s).
Kubik then tripled off the top of the fence in right center in the fourth to drive home sophomore Erin Kliefoth (Exira, Iowa/Exira) and put the Beavers in front, 4-0.
Wartburg, which had just three hits through the first four innings, got on the board in the fifth with a lead-off home run before a double-steal in the seventh scored the game’s final run.
Stocker helped lead the way, going 2-for-3 at the plate with the two RBI, as BVU out-hit the Knights, 7-5.
Wartburg got a run in the top half of the first inning, but it was all Beavers from there as they scored 14 unanswered runs to win the five-inning contest.
Sam Knudsen (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) belted a grandslam in the bottom half of the first inning before Kliefoth added a three-run shot later in the inning to give BVU a 7-1 advantage after just one frame.
Knudsen, who finished with six RBI in the contest, then doubled home a run in the second with Stocker also scoring after a throw went into second trying to cut down Knudsen.
Sophomore Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM), who was one of three Beavers to tally three hits in the game, drove home the first of five runs in the third to put BVU comfortably in front, 14-1.
As a team, BVU had five extra-base hits in the contest and out-hit the Knights, 14-3.
Freshman Faith Schmidt (Emmetsburg, Iowa/Emmetsburg) went the distance and picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on just three hits, while striking out two.
It marks the first sweep of the Knights since 2010 and just the third since 1998.
Buena Vista improves to 11-11 overall (2-2 IIAC) and will look to move back over .500 when it travels to No. 21 Central College on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
