Rosemount, Minn.

The Buena Vista softball team opened its 2012 season on Saturday inside of the Rosemount Dome, and the Beavers came out and took game one of the doubleheader against #14 St. Thomas, 4-2, before the Tommies came back and took game two, 14-6.

Senior Chancey Wilcke came up big with both her bat and her arm in the opener.  She got the offense going for the Beavers in the first inning, blasting a three-run home run with one out.

On the mound, she also went the distance, allowing just two runs, while scattering nine hits and striking out one.

Brooke Berkey went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored for BVU, which beat the Tommies for the first time since 2003.  It had dropped the previous 16 meetings.  Megan Feller added a hit and drove in the final run for the Beavers, while Jordan Pilcher also added a hit.

St. Thomas then came back with a three-run homer of its own in the first inning of game two en route to a 3-1 lead after one frame.  The Tommies, who hit three home runs in the contest, scored 10 of their 14 runs in the first three innings.

BVU scored single runs in the first and second innings before adding two more in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Aphton Roberts turned in a solid game at the plate, finishing with three hits in four at-bats, including one double, while also scoring three times.  Berkey added two more hits and drove in two, while also scoring twice, while Sam Engleman chimed in with two hits and one RBI.

Jami Webster suffered the loss on the mound, going six innings and allowing seven earned runs, while striking out five.

Buena Vista is 1-1 overall and will be back on the same diamond on Saturday for a pair of games against Carleton College.
