Sophomore Jordon Pilcher (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) belted a solo home run to center in the first inning and freshman Jenna Falline (Newell, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout, to help lift the Buena Vista softball team to a 1-0 upset victory over #14 Carthage College (7-3) on Monday afternoon.
Pilcher took the first pitch she saw and lifted it over the centerfield fence for her first career home run. It was the third long ball on the day for BVU, which had two in its earlier loss to Merrimack.
That proved to be all of the offense Falline needed as she didn’t allow a hit until a two-out single in the fifth. Aside from an error an inning before, that was the only other base runner she allowed in the contest. It was her third complete-game of the year, but her first career shutout. The win moves her to 4-1 on the year, and she lowers her ERA to 2.48.
Sam Engleman (Hawarden, Iowa/West Sioux) is heating up at the plate, as she finished 2-for-3, including a double, and is now five for her last 12 at the plate, after starting the year 1-for-14.
The win moves BVU to 5-4 on the year and it will now play a trio of games on Tuesday, beginning with a rescheduled contest against St. Olaf College at 9:00am ET. It’s a make-up contest from Sunday’s rainout. The team will then take on sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State at 1:00pm ET followed by a 3:00pm contest against UW-Whitewater.
