Softball Falls to Simpson to Open IIAC Tournament

Freshman Stephanie Hayden (Prairie City, Iowa/PCM) put Buena Vista out in front 1-0 with an RBI single in the top of the third inning, but it was Simpson College responding with nine runs in the bottom half before adding four more in the fourth to defeat the Beavers, 13-1 (5 innings), in the first round of the 2012 Iowa Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Brooke Berkey (Colfax, Iowa/Colfax-Mingo) doubled with one out in the third and scored three batters later when Hayden lined a single to left.

Freshman Jessica Stocker (Des Moines, Iowa/Carlisle) and senior Jami Webster (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) also added doubles in the game for BVU, which was held to just four hits.

Simpson began its half of the third with a walk and eight straight hits before the Beavers recorded the first out.

Senior Chancey Wilcke (Battle Creek, Iowa/BC-IG) suffered the loss on the mound for BVU, going two-plus innings and being charged with eight runs on nine hits.  Fellow senior Jami Webster (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) came on in relief and worked the final two innings, allowing five runs on five hits.

Buena Vista, now 17-16 on the year, will look to bounce back on Friday morning, as it will face top-seed Luther College, which fell, 2-0, to fourth-seed Coe College.  The loser of that game is eliminated.
