The Buena Vista men's soccer team needed a win on Wednesday night at Wartburg to earn a spot in this year's Iowa Conference Tournament, but came up just short, falling 2-0 to the Knights (8-9, 4-4 IIAC).
Wartburg broke a scoreless match with a goal during the 17th minute en route to a 1-0 halftime lead. The score remained the same until the Knights converted a penalty kick with under six minutes left in regulation.
"I thought the guys came out and played well tonight," said BVU head coach Marc Baumbach. "We went in and made some adjustments at halftime and really put the pressure on them (Wartburg) as we went after the game-tying goal."
The Knights took 13 total shots in the contest with BVU tallying seven. Freshman Steve Gutschenritter was the only Beaver to register multiple shots, including one on goal.
Senior Dustin Dobbels closed the book on his career with a solid effort in-goal, going the distance and chalking up three saves.
"We definitely played at a high level to finish the season," Baumbach added. I am pleased with the way our guys approached the match overall."
Buena Vista concludes its season at 6-11 overall, 2-6 IIAC.
