Buena Vista University head men’s basketball coach Brian Van Haaften has announced the hiring of Jon Millea to become his top assistant beginning next season. Millea replaces Eric Wiebers, who had spent the last six years on the BVU bench.
Millea, who graduated from BVU in 2009, played four seasons under Van Haaften and was part of senior class which went 78-33 during their career, including a stellar 50-14 mark in Iowa Conference play. He averaged nearly 13 minutes per game off the bench as a senior, while shooting nearly 55 percent from the floor, as the Beavers finished 23-3 overall (15-1 IIAC) that year.
“We are very excited to have Jon be a coach in our program,” says Van Haaften. The experiences he has garnered in the last few years at the collegiate level will help him do very well here at BVU. As a former player, his passion for BVU and the basketball program is very evident, and he will help our program continue to grow.”
A native of Davenport, Iowa, Millea spent last season as an assistant coach at Mount Marty College (S.D.) after serving as an assistant at Southwest Minnesota State University for two years, while working on his master of science degree in education – with an emphasis on sports leadership.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be returning to Storm Lake to join the Buena Vista men's basketball staff,” says Millea. “I'm very excited to work for Coach Van Haaften and help add to the tradition that he has already established. These past few years of college coaching at different levels has given me great experience and has prepared me for this position.”
Millea is expected to begin his duties on campus this summer.
