Senior Jeff Janssen made 4-of-8 shots from downtown to finish with 17 points to lead three Beavers in double figures, as the Buena Vista men’s basketball team used a strong shooting performance to cruise to an 84-68 home victory over visiting Cornell College (2-11, 0-4 IIAC) on Wednesday night.
Janssen finished 6-of-11 shooting overall and also dished out five assists. Junior Wes Nordquist went 8-of-11 from the field to follow with 16 points, while also grabbing six rebounds. Senior Trent Fisher came off the bench to chip in with 10 points and four rebounds. Alex Savage also provided a spark off the bench for the Beavers, tallying nine points and matching Janssen with a career-best five assists. As a team, BVU dished out 22 assists on its 28 field goals in the game.
Senior Doug Bissen hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds, as the Beavers out-rebounded the Rams, 39-28.
Cornell squirted out to an early 7-2 lead before senior Joe Bohan stole a pass and went the distance for the lay-up, capping a 12-2 run and giving BVU a 14-9 lead. A three-pointer from Janssen then made it 20-11 with eight minutes to play in the opening half before Janssen buried a three-pointer and was fouled just minutes later. He made the free-throw and pushed the margin to 13 at 28-15, and the Beavers maintained that lead by taking a 42-28 lead into the half.
Nordquist and Janssen combined to score BVU’s first nine points of the second half to help push the cushion to 17 just two minutes in before a jumper by Janssen gave the team a 51-32 lead.
Cornell clawed its way back within 13 midway through, but that proved to be as close as the Rams could get. BVU then bumped it to 20 as the game was nearing the four minute mark and went onto the 16-point win.
Buena Vista has now won five of its last six games overall and has evened its overall record at 6-6, while improving to 2-1 in the Iowa Confernece. The Beavers are back in action this Saturday afternoon when it travels to Luther College (9-2, 3-0 IIAC) for a 4:00pm contest against the Norse.
